Certified Tourism Business have a Leading Edge
The recent Australian Tourism Awards recently recognized excellence in all areas of Tourism in Australia - with entrants required to prepare an extensive submission based on all areas of business practice.
Certified operators are creating a high standard for the Australian Tourism industry with almost a quarter of the winners at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards being ECO Certified through Ecotourism Australia. This is an incredible result considering ECO Certification is only applicable to those businesses based in nature or have a nature focus.
In addition, Adelaide Convention Centre won the Meetings & Tourism Business Award and were the first convention centre in Australia to become Climate Action Certified.
Certification has long been used as a tool for improvement and as a guideline to determine how your business meets current best practice standards. It has also resulted in Australia gaining global recognition as a leading ecotourism destination. Tourism businesses who undertake certification make a commitment to sustainable practices and the provision of a quality experience for the traveller.
Further to this, ECO Certified Lane Cove River Tourist Park has been named the finalist for the Tourism for Tomorrow Award for Conservation. Ecotourism Australia was proud to be awarded the Conservation Award in 2008 and is delighted that again an Australian ECO Certified tourism operator is a finalist for this year’s event.
This prestigious global award recognises best practice in sustainable tourism within the Travel and Tourism industry. This prestigious award is judged by an independent panel of judges comprised of some of the world's most authoritative experts in sustainable development. Highly regarded for its credibility and well respected by industry, government and international media, the application process is extremely rigorous and involves the nominee meeting a range of stringent criteria along with onsite verification visits.
RACQ has released its Top 150 Must Do’s with Paronella Park voted the number One Must Do. 8 of the top 20 tour operators or destinations in the RACQ’s 150 Must Do’s are ECO Certified which continues to reinforce the high standards set by certified businesses and further demonstrates the fact that they are also excelling in the delivery of excellent visitor experiences.

The Ecotourism Australia vision: "To be leaders in assisting ecotourism and other committed tourism operations to become environmentally sustainable, economically viable, and socially and culturally responsible".
Ecotourism Australia was formed in 1991 as an incorporated non-profit organisation, and is the peak national body for the ecotourism industry. Ecotourism Australia aims to grow and promote ecotourism and to assist tourism operators to become environmentally sustainable, economically viable and socially and culturally responsible.
Membership includes tour operators, ecotourism accommodation, tourism planners, protected area managers, academics and students, regional tourism associations and travellers.
Ecotourism Australia’s certification program ECO is a world first. It provides objective monitoring and auditing of organisations’ ecotourism claims and provides travel agents and tourists with an assurance of best practice ecological sustainability, natural area management and quality ecotourism experiences.
Ecotourism Australia recently added ROC (Respect Our Culture) Certification for Indigenous Tourism operators and Climate Action Australia Certification to help the tourism industry work towards a more sustainable future.
In 2008, Ecotourism Australia was awarded the prestigious World Travel and Tourism Council “Tourism for Tomorrow” Award for Conservation at the World Tourism Summit in recognition of Ecotourism Australia’s significant contribution to the conservation and preservation of natural heritage.
