SENIOR GUIDE AT MT BARNEY LODGE

The successful person will work closely with Innes Larkin (Owner Mt Barney Lodge) on the Outdoor Education and Adventure program at Mt Barney Lodge.

Mt Barney Lodge is a multi-award winning, Advanced Ecotourism accredited business that is an expert in adventure within Mt Barney National Park. The Outdoors program involves school camps from 3 – 9 days, a kid’s holiday program, guiding of Top Rope and Lead Rock Climbing and Mountain Expeditions up the surrounding mountains as well as Queensland’s most impressive peak, Mt Barney. We are also the host of the Scenic Rim Adventure Festival a 4 day festival with Internationally renowned adventure speakers, expeditions, music and more.

Mt Barney Lodge is currently going through its Reconciliation Action Plan and works closely with the Department of Environment and Science on monitoring within the surrounding parks. Our fragile environment is central to the outdoors program at Mt Barney Lodge, and interpretation of this is key to our program. The successful applicant will be able to show knowledge and experience in this area.

Key roles and responsibilities

  • You will be responsible for the implementation and coordination of all school camps at Mt Barney Lodge. You will be guiding on most camps with Innes Larkin as the onsite safety coordinator
  • You will be responsible for the design and coordination of the Guiding and Adventure program at Mt Barney Lodge and will be available for guiding across weekends and school holidays as that is the predominant guiding time.
  • You will be responsible for creating an annual staff professional development program for each fulltime MBL Outdoor leader
  • You will be responsible for the monitoring, safety checking and ordering, and storage of all Adventure Equipment
  • You will report monthly to Owners on Staff PD progress, personal PD progress, month ahead staffing requirements, 3 months ahead adventure program
  • Contribute to the smooth running of the Lodge with other tasks as required

Mt Barney Lodge offer

  • Annual wage of $60 - $65 000 depending on skills and experience (March to Oct contract a possibility)
  • + Holidays and Holiday leave loading
  • + Overtime or RDO’s
  • + Super

There is an opportunity for a number of casual guides to become regulars at Mt Barney Lodge leading school camps and guided expeditions as well as kids holiday activities. In early March successful applicant will be paid for 3 days to orientate themselves to the region and to Mt Barney Lodge procedures.

The following are essential criteria:

• Working with children card (blue card)
• Wilderness First Aid certification
• Vaccinated for Covid 19
Key attributes
• You will be experienced at working with School camps onsite and in expedition style
• You will have qualifications/certifications or relevant documented experience in Rock climbing, Abseiling, Vertical rescue, Bushwalking and Navigation (Cert III or above)
• Experience or qualifications in interpretation of the natural or cultural landscape of the Scenic Rim will be highly regarded.
Mt Barney Lodge offer
• Hourly wage of $31-$35 depending on skills and qualifications
• Superannuation guarantee of 10%

Rodney Fox Shark Expeditions are seeking people to fill crew positions including a boat chef and an experienced Dive Master/Coxswains for an immediate start to join our on-board crew as we travel the stunning South Aussie coast and beyond.

The successful applicants should have experience working on a liveaboard boat and have a thirst for adventure. Onboard the MV Rodney Fox you will be working in a demanding environment, diving, cleaning, and helping with all liveaboard duties. The ability to work to a flexible schedule including days, evenings, weekends and public holidays is essential as expeditions are often at sea for several days at a time.

Baird Bay Ocean Experience in the Eyre Peninsula Region are seeking a Tour Guide/Deckhand to work 7 days a week. Work days are weather permitting, particularly during the summer months.

The role entails a number of responsibilities including preparing for tours, cleaning up after tours, as well as occasional tasks upkeeping Baird Bay Ocean Eco Experience’s holiday accommodation adjacent to their office. With a small café located in their office, customer service and barista experience is looked upon favourably.

Applicants must have a pleasant personality and be able to converse with passengers. Boating experience and a coxswains ticket are looked upon favourably. Holding a first aid certificate is essential.

Accommodation is located close by and a farmhouse is available for rent approximately 14km from the workplace at a reasonable rate.

Our Story:

Under Down Under Tours is the leading operator of active small group tours in Tasmania. Operating since 1996, we are Tasmanian owned and operated, and offer a variety of day and multi-day tour experiences around our state. We have been Advanced Eco Certified since 2002 and are passionate about sharing Tasmania’s wild places and history. Our small group tours focus on nature-based experiences in iconic Tasmanian destinations such as Freycinet, Mt Field and Cradle Mountain National Parks, Bruny Island, the Tasman Peninsula, the West Coast and the Bay of Fires.

The Role: 

We operate tours year-round and provide opportunities to work for a season or on a continuing basis. Our Driver Guides are a critical part of our business and are responsible for creating outstanding travelling experiences for our guests. The duration of our tours are varied and range from 1 day to 9 days and can involve walks undertaken with guests of up to 4 hours.

Our Driver Guides are fit, active, passionate about and comfortable in the outdoors. The provision of accurate, entertaining and informative commentary is an important part of the role along with ongoing safe and professional driving skills.

Above all our guides must be considerate and approachable and willing to lead small groups of people from a wide range of backgrounds, ages and cultures.

Job Requirements: 

  • Eligible applicants must have or be willing to obtain the following licenses or qualifications:
  • Light Rigid license (minimum)
  • Working with Vulnerable People Accreditation (or equivalent for another Australian State or Territory)
  • Public Passenger Vehicle License (or equivalent for another Australian State or Territory)
  • First Aid certification
  • Full right to work in Australia

Applicants must:

  • Be able to provide excellent customer service
  • Have highly developed interpersonal skills
  • Be highly motivated and confident with working independently
  • Be a terrific storyteller of local history, culture and nature
  • Have good personal presentation
  • Be physically fit and able to walk with guests for up to 4 hours

Previous guiding experience is preferred but not essential. A knowledge and love of the outdoors with a passion for the environment is a must.

ACT Parks and Conservation Service

COMMUNITY AND VOLUNTEER PROGRAM MANAGER - ACT PARKS AND CONSERVATION SERVICE 

The ACT Parks and Conservation Service (PCS) is seeking a people person that believes in the power of community to make a difference. The Community and Volunteer Programs Manager works with community partners to develop, facilitate and evaluate programs that enable community and volunteer engagement in projects throughout the reserve estate.

The position works under limited supervision and is responsible for the delivery of the ParkCare Initiative, including the ParkCare Patch, VisitorAssist, WildlifeAssist and RangerAssist volunteer streams. The position supervises a team of staff and works to support PCS District staff and community partners to engage and promote the involvement of community members in reserve management activities. 

Eligibility/Other Requirements:

Mandatory:

  • Be physically able and willing to undertake incident management duties, including participation in fire standby, fire suppression and fire training.
  • Be prepared to wear a uniform; and
  • Possess a manual drivers’ licence.

Highly Desirable:

  • Tertiary qualifications relevant to Volunteer Management, Natural or Cultural Resource Management and/or Recreation or Tourism Management in protected areas are desirable but not essential.

Our internships and volunteer placements are unpaid, located in Brisbane QLD, and typically require a minimum of three days per week for a minimum duration of three months.
