Calypso Star Charter goes carbon neutral!
After a lot of hard work, dedication and with the help of Canopy, Calypso Star Charter has managed to offset 100% of their carbon emissions relating to vessel propulsion, shore power, office, company travel, passenger transfers (hotel to vessel) and bait storage.
Calypso Star Charter has been a member of Ecotourism Australia since early 2012 and all of their products have an Advanced Ecotourism Certification.
Calypso Star Charters was founded in 1990 by Captain Rolf Czabayski who was an avid game fisherman who had tagged and released many Great White Sharks before their protection in 1997. The business changed hands in 2006 with local business identity, Ron Forster and crew member, Andrew Wright taking over ownership from Rolf.
Calypso Star Charters is privileged to be the only one-day shark cage diving operator who is permitted to use fish berley and they only use locally sourced, natural fish product to attract the sharks, attaching the tethered baits by natural fibre twine.
Operating within Marine Protected Areas, Calypso is environmentally conscious and their policy is to be as energy efficient as they can, in order to reduce their CO2 emissions from fossil fuel. Canopy’s annual audit and management plan allows them to offset any unavoidable CO2 emissions that may occur by retiring certified carbon reduction units on their behalf.
Canopy offers services such as auditing, carbon management, environmental sustainability options, climate change advisory and policy services to organisations, corporates and all levels of Government.
Calypso Star Charters operate in the challenging marine environment and they visit some of the most pristine locations in South Australia. They strive to have minimal impact on the areas they visit and the animals they see by adopting methods such as meticulous vessel maintenance to ensure peak operating efficiency and therefore minimise the use of fossil fuel, as well as carefully monitoring passenger demand to vary the number of tours operated.
